On Friday we go to HESFES (Home Educators Seaside Festival) 2007. Assorted members of my family have been going for years – I’ve never been however.

We’ll be camping for a week, during the end of the wettest June since records began, which also happens to be during the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament – it rains this week every year without fail. In fact I just realised that it will be exactly 3 years to the week since my last summer holiday. It rained lots then too.

I am not a big fan of camping. I’m not sure if it’s because my family caravanned a lot when I was younger, or whether my body and mind are aware of the fact that human kind has evolved and no longer needs to sleep ‘outdoors’ on the ground, whatever the case – I prefer holidays to be easy, not hard work – which is how I see camping. I am hoping that I can put my camping prejudice behind me and have a good time non the less, and I’m sure I will, because this holiday really should be fun, even if it does rain all the time.

Things will of course be different as this is the first extended family holiday I’ve been on. Those in attendance include myself, my girlfriend Steph, her son Jordan (who is 7), my parents and my youngest brother Al. So essentially we are two families going on holiday together. HESFES is a gathering of home educators and home educated kids, the later of which, both of my brothers and I were. Not having been I don’t know that much about it, other than that there will be hundreds of kids there and lots of activities, and perhaps most importantly there is a pub on site, with a playground next to the beer garden – result!

I’m hoping that the majority of the kids there will be ‘cool kids’, like I was (I think a lot of that came down to my ‘alternative’ upbringing/education), not little bastards. Hopefully there will be plenty of activities for Jordan to do whilst the rest of us relax and…enjoy the weather – yeah right!

We are in the process of manically getting everything ready before the 4 hour drive on Friday. The tent has been checked and everything appears to be in order, and today the annual airbed repairs were done – so far so good…fingers crossed!

Steph, Al and I are planning on moblogging the holiday here.

Glasto-fever…

So Glastonbury fever has gripped the UK once again. Having never been to Glastonbury (it’s the only one of the 3 major festivals I’ve not attended) I think on reflection that I’m happy watching the ample coverage the BBC are providing via BBC2, 3 and 4, along with all the BBCi options (which let you select which act you want to see) from the comfort of the sofa at home, without having to put up with the rain, mud and cold weather.

I have fond memories of staying glued to the TV for two entire days years on end watching the Glastonbury coverage on the BBC. Watching John Peel, Jools Holland and Jo Whiley’s bad jokes and dodgy links in between acts. For some people going to Glastonbury is an annual event, for me watching it on TV is! Maybe one year I’ll finally go…

Maybe I’m getting old, or maybe it’s because I have a dislike of camping (I’m spending a week in a field doing just that in 5 days time!), but my idea of a festival is watching great bands in the SUN. Not in what looks like a never-ending field of mud. It’d be cool if Google Earth had some satellite photos of the site before and after – I think they’d be pretty horrific!

I watched quite a bit of the TV coverage yesterday, including The Fratelis (boo), Bright Eyes (woo!), Bloc Party (woo!) and Arcade Fire who were brilliant as ever. I need to go and see them someday and partake in the chaos that is their live show! And although I’m not a fan, I must mention Kasabian who have definitely become one of the bands that are essential to any festival. Missed the Arctic Monkeys (who I’m still not convinced about), but I’m sure they’ll be repeated.

I’m looking forward to The Killers headline set tonight, and also The Who tomorrow – despite it only being half of the original line-up, they were awesome at Live8 back in July 2005, so I’m hoping they’ll be worthy headliners at Glastonbury!

There’s some pretty cool (muddy) photos being posted over at MoblogUK from those silly enough to brave the mud, including the Greenpeace mobloggers. Check ‘em out here.

Tumbling…

Posted on Friday, June 15, 2007 in Me

At the moment I’m blogging here: http://themiddleofyesterday.tumblr.com/ – it’s a slightly different style to this blog, but seeing as I seldom have time to write much (hence my last post here being in February!), it works at the moment!

I’m sure I’ll comeback to wordpress one day though…
