The Whale

Photo (AP) The whole Whale saga was very sad. I watched it fairly closely on the news, it was just such a strange news headline to see. "Whale in the Thames" - never thought I see that one! As Saturday wore on and I was checking the news on my phone I hoped that he/she was going to make it, and at one point things were looking up, but unfortunately as is often the case in these situations the Whale didn't make it :-( Later that night in the pub we were talking about it and I came to the conclusion that although it was a sad story, it was one that had done wonders for Whale-kind. Maybe this was a PR cue for Whales? Maybe this Whale was on it's way out anyway and it was asked to go on a suicide mission of sorts that would raise the profiles of Whales throughout the world? Going out in a blaze of glory, uniting a major city, drawing thousands of people from their homes to the banks and bridges of the Thames, even the world's media couldn't resist the headline making stunt the Whales had planned. Subscriptions to 'Save the Whales' and Whale adoption schemes will rise the world over, and thousands of kids who'd normally never see a live Whale, let alone one swimming in their local river would grow up with tales of the day the Whale came to town, creating a whole new generation of adults who love Whales and fight in their corner. I hope this was the plan, and I really hope it pays off! Experts apparently knew it was a male Whales very early on, because it refused to stop and ask for directions! (Courtesy of Ms Jennings!)
